Transportation, marine and mining noise control

Exhaust systems, intake systems and acoustic lining for machinery that moves — mining equipment, diesel traction and marine engines — together with roadside and railside noise barriers.

• Mining work normally starts by treating equipment as delivered by its manufacturer so that it meets the noise specification of that particular mine. In practice that means secondary silencers, a new exhaust system and engine compartment lining, rather than different machinery.
• Space on mobile equipment is always the constraint, so exhaust systems here are fabricated to the position rather than selected from a catalogue.
• Marine exhausts are built dry or water injected. Water injection cools the gas faster, which allows the injector to sit closer to temperature-sensitive components than a conventional arrangement would.
• Marine exhaust ducting is available in stainless steel and in glass reinforced plastic, chosen on temperature, weight and the corrosion conditions of the vessel.
• Intake systems on traction and outdoor equipment have to solve dust filtration and water ingress alongside noise, and both the storm louvre and the filter add pressure drop that the fan or engine has to absorb.
• Removable insulation blankets are stated by the manufacturer at a 1200 C limit, asbestos free, vibration resistant, and able to bring touch temperatures down far enough for routine maintenance without a shutdown.
• Roadside and railside barriers are a different design problem from machinery: they are set by receiver position and line of sight, not by the source.
